Offender Support Program
Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Renewed Opportunity
The Offender Support Program at Thursday Island Justice Inc. is dedicated to helping Indigenous offenders rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities. Grounded in cultural respect and restorative justice, this program provides the tools and support needed to break the cycle of reoffending and foster long-term personal and community growth.
Our Services
The Offender Support Program offers comprehensive assistance tailored to the unique needs of offenders:
• Rehabilitation Plans: Connecting individuals to culturally appropriate counselling, substance abuse programs, and other rehabilitative services.
• Community Reintegration: Providing support for housing, employment, health, and relationship counselling as individuals return to their communities.
• Post-Custody Support: Assisting with navigating non-custodial conditions like community service, financial restitution, or probation requirements.

Breaking the Cycle of Reoffending
Our program recognizes the importance of addressing the root causes of criminal behavior, including:

-
Social and economic barriers.
-
Substance abuse and mental health challenges.
-
Disconnection from cultural traditions and community networks.

By fostering a culturally sensitive approach, we help offenders reconnect with their identity and establish a strong foundation for positive change.
Community Collaboration
The program works closely with Elders, community leaders, and local organizations to ensure holistic support. Through this collaborative approach, we:
-
Provide culturally informed guidance during court proceedings.
-
Address conflicts between traditional customs and the Western justice system.
-
Advocate for restorative practices that benefit offenders and their communities.
Our
Impact
Through our Offender Support Program, we aim to:

-
Reduce recidivism rates by addressing the underlying causes of criminal behavior.
-
Rebuild trust between offenders, their families, and the broader community.
-
Strengthen community ties and cultural heritage, creating safer and healthier environments for everyone.
