Justice Support Services
Culturally-Rooted Support for Indigenous Communities
At Thursday Island Justice Inc., our Justice Support Services program is dedicated to addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system. This initiative supports individuals involved in civil, criminal, and domestic or family violence matters, ensuring culturally appropriate advocacy and assistance at every stage of their legal process.
How We Help
Our Justice Support Services offer comprehensive support for Indigenous victims and offenders, including:

-
Cultural Submissions: Preparing and presenting oral and written submissions to the Magistrates Court that outline background context and culturally appropriate recommendations for penalties, sentencing, and bail conditions.
-
Court Representation: Providing support during 80% of court sittings each year, ensuring a trusted voice advocates for Indigenous clients.
-
Post-Court Follow-Ups: Offering ongoing assistance after legal proceedings, such as help with housing applications, employment paperwork, and public trust wills.

Why It Matters
This program ensures judicial decisions are informed by cultural knowledge, fostering outcomes that are rehabilitative rather than punitive.
By partnering with a panel of respected Elders, we advocate for diversionary processes and restorative justice, helping individuals reconnect with their communities and break the cycle of reoffending.
Additional Support Offered
Assisting with Victim Impact Statements.
Linking offenders and victims with rehabilitation programs, counselling, and mediation services.
Managing financial challenges, including liaising with SPER for unpaid fines.
Building Stronger Futures
Our Justice Support Services work hand-in-hand with local stakeholders, including law enforcement, legal aid, and mental health services, to ensure meaningful, community-led solutions for justice.
By integrating traditional cultural practices with modern legal processes, we aim to create a fairer system that supports healing and long-term reintegration.
